The Toxic Workplace

What Happens When You’re Not in the Clique

Cover of The Toxic Workplace: What Happens When You’re Not in the Clique

A workplace case study of exclusion, informal power and organisational dysfunction.

The book examines what happens when the formal organisation chart matters less than the informal clique: who is protected, who is isolated, how inconsistent standards develop and why employees can remain in unhealthy environments long after trust has broken down.

Why I wrote this book

This book grew from direct experience of workplaces in which informal relationships had become more powerful than clear systems. I was interested in the gap between what an organisation says about fairness, leadership and accountability and what employees can experience when a clique controls information, social belonging or access to influence.

The intention was not to write a management textbook. It is closer to a case study and reflective account, using concrete incidents to examine patterns of exclusion, inconsistent leadership, gaslighting, silence and the gradual erosion of confidence.

Why anonymity matters

The book deliberately anonymises people and organisations. That protects individuals, but it also creates an important limitation: readers cannot independently test every incident against a public documentary record. I therefore regard the book as personal workplace testimony and analysis rather than as an externally verified institutional history.

What the book explores

The recurring questions concern informal power: how cliques form, why managers sometimes accommodate them, how standards become inconsistent, and why people who challenge a culture can be made to feel that they are the problem. It also considers why employees stay—income, references, hope that circumstances will improve—and why leaving can carry its own emotional and professional cost.

How it fits into my wider work

The Toxic Workplace belongs to the secondary leadership and governance strand of my writing. Its connection with my historical work is an interest in the difference between formal authority and power as it is actually exercised. In this book that question is contemporary and personal rather than historical.
